独立或依赖状态

Determining whether you are 独立或依赖 for financial aid purposes can 有时会让人困惑.

The FAFSA determines dependency status in order to calculate your eligibility for aid. 你可以认为自己是独立的. However, according to federal regulations, if you do not meet one of the following criteria, you must file as a Dependent 学生 and report parental income and assets as well as your own. 

被视为独立, a Butte College 学生 must meet a minimum of one of the following criteria for the school year for which they are applying for financial aid:

Age

Answer "Yes" if you were born before January 1, 2001. To be considered Independent, 学生 must be 24岁 as of December 31 of the year for which 你请求援助 (e.g.2000年12月31日 (24-25学年).

Answer this as of the day you submit the FAFSA. You are considered "married" if you are married as of the day you submit the FAFSA. 同时, answer "Yes" if you are separated but not divorced

The Department of Education regulations are very specific as to who qualifies for 独立的地位.

Giving birth to or fathering a child does not by itself make a 学生 eligible for 独立的地位 for financial aid needs analysis. 条例规定 学生 must provide a minimum of 50% of support for the child. FAFSA的问题问道 "Do you have children who will receive 他们一半以上的支持来自你们 during 颁奖年度从7月1日到6月30日?"

The federal processor may require verification for child support paid.

Sometimes the answers to the Dependency Status questions on the FAFSA determine that a 学生 is Dependent and must provide parental information even though their living 形势不允许他们这样做. 

依赖项重写 is an action determined by the 财政援助办事处 through a 受抚养状态上诉, on a case-by-case basis for 学生s with documented unusual circumstances comprising “不利的家庭状况”." An adverse home situation may include physical abuse, alcohol or drug abuse in the household, neglect or a dysfunctional home environment. Documentation of such adversity must accompany the appeal. Documentation may include letters from social workers, high school counselors/teachers, adult family members, Child Protective 服务, Juvenile Probation, etc.

The following situations are not considered "unusual" and cannot be used as a basis 对于依赖覆盖:

  • The 学生 living on their own or having adequate resources of their own to be considered 自营.
  • Parents refusing to contribute to their 学生's education or refusing to provide 关于FAFSA的信息.
  • The 学生 not being claimed by either parent for several tax years prior to the 申请年份.

Federal regulations do not permit the use of professional judgment by financial aid offices to make exceptions in these situations.
